A hybrid of three Rubus species—Dewberry, Blackberry, and Raspberry—the Youngberry stands out as an exceptional combination of vigour, productivity, and flavour. Developed in Louisiana by BM Young, the Youngberry produce fruits that closely resemble those of its fellow Rubus hybrid, the Boysenberry, albeit slightly sweeter, smaller, and begin ripening earlier in Summer (with the season extending into Autumn). The taste is an enticing blend of its parentage, offering succulent and juicy fruits perfect for anyone who loves Rubus fruits. Whether enjoyed fresh off the vine or processed into jams, jellies, sauces, pies, or liqueurs, the Youngberry offers a delightful, flavour reflective of its parentage. Like many Rubus hybrids, the Youngberry boasts excellent disease resistance and robust vigour. The ideal conditions for Youngberries are a slightly acidic, fertile loam soil with superior drainage and moisture retention—conditions that can be further enhanced through mulching and incorporating compost. Trellising or similar support structures are highly advisable and wil provide canes with ventilation and wind tolerance. In regions with harsh summers, providing afternoon shade can shield the plants from burns. Youngberry should be provided with plentiful watering throughout flowering and fruiting, especially in dry summers or generally during droughts. As with other Rubus, Youngberries produce canes on which they bear fruit. Notably, these plants feature nearly thornless canes, occasionally sporting small prickles on new growth. The trailing canes can reach heights of up to 3 metres and fruit prolifically on second-year canes (floricanes). Suckering can be controlled through planting in containers, raised garden beds or through positioning them in a location where emerging suckers can be easily managed such as through mowing. With its sweet, delectable fruits appealing to all ages and its manageable, vigorous growth habit, the Youngberry emerges as an ideal berry for temperate climates.
