TANGELO

General Info – Tangelo

A delightful blend of Mandarin and Grapefruit flavours, the Tangelo offers a tangy-sweet taste that is simply irresistible.
With its large, juicy, and mostly seedless segments, as well as its easily peelable skin, the Tangelo is the perfect citrus fruit. Combining the tangy taste of Grapefruit (minus the bitterness) with the juicy segments of an Orange and the effortless peelability of a Mandarin, the Tangelo is truly a Citrus lover’s dream. Whether enjoyed fresh, juiced, or incorporated into desserts, Tangelos are versatile and can be used in various culinary applications just like Mandarins, Oranges, or Grapefruits. Many varieties such as the popular Minneola have a distinct ‘nipple’ like growth at the stem end of fruits. The vibrant flavour of the Tangelo provides a delightful contrast and escape during the typically cool and sometimes bleak months of July to August.
In addition to its culinary appeal, the Tangelo also adds ornamental charm to any garden with its dark green foliage and rounded shape. When in bloom, the plants are a sight to behold, with their perfumed, white flowers adding both visual beauty and a delightful fragrance to the garden. The mature fruits, with their deep orange hue, create an attractive contrast against the foliage, ripening from July to October depending on the variety.
Optimal growth and production is achieved in full sun positions, which also enhance disease and pest resistance. A rich, well-draining, neutral-slightly acidic soil will encourage the best growth and plants will greatly benefit from mulching which will retain moisture and protect and nourish the surface roots of the plant. Like other citrus varieties, Tangelos are often grafted onto the Trifoliata rootstock for normal size or Flying Dragon rootstock for dwarf size. These rootstocks provide plants with a tolerance for frosts and cooler conditions, in addition to a hardiness to less than ideal conditions. On dwarf rootstocks, Tangelo are well-suited to cultivation in containers.
A superb hybrid that embodies the best qualities of various citrus fruits, the Tangelo is a must-have for citrus enthusiasts, especially those with a love for tangy and tart flavours.
