General Info – Sweet Leaf Bush, Katuk, Star Gooseberry, Rau Ngót, Cekur Manis

A perennial leafy green suitable for tropical and subtropical climates with hot, humid summers. Sweet Leaf or Katuk, is often utilised as a tropical substitute for Spinach, it can be harvested year-round in tropical regions, while in cooler subtropical areas, the harvest season extends from spring to autumn. Aptly named for its sweet taste, Sweet Leaf’s flavour is often compared to fresh green peas with a slight nuttiness, and its young shoots are also edible and reminiscent of Asparagus. It is highly nutritious, providing an excellent source of vitamins K and C, as well as being rich in potassium, protein, and iron. Both young and mature leaves can be cooked in stir-fries or added to juices and smoothies.
Note on potential toxicity of raw leaves: Consuming raw leaves is generally not recommended, although it is not clear to what extent they may be toxic or how much can be safely consumed raw. Excessive consumption can cause stomach aches and has been linked to long-term lung issues. Eating small amounts of raw leaves is often considered acceptable, but they should not be blended into juices and smoothies. Regardless, care and consideration should be taken before consuming raw leaves, and gardeners are advised to conduct research for their own comfort
Native to the tropics of South and Southeast Asia, Sweet Leaf thrives in hot, humid conditions, but its growth slows considerably in cool winters, often becoming dormant. Sweet Leaf is suitable for cultivation in both tropical and subtropical climates. Although it may be damaged by frost or cold weather, it can reshoot in the spring. Sweet Leaf is highly adaptable, tolerating a range of soil conditions, rainfall, and sunlight. It can grow in heavy clays, loams, and sandy soils, including acidic soils. Ideally, it prefers slightly heavy, fertile, and well-draining soil. Moderate to heavy rainfall (600mm to 4000mm) is suitable, but it can also tolerate dry conditions, especially during dormancy in cooler periods. Planting in a sheltered spot protected from strong winds is important, but Sweet Leaf can tolerate anything from full sun to heavy shade.
Sweet Leaf belongs to the Phyllanthaceae family, making it a relative of Star Gooseberry and Amla (Phyllanthus), Burmese Grape and Rambai (Baccaurea), and Bignay and Herbert River Cherry (Antidesma). They bear a particular resemblance to many of the Phyllanthus genus, to which it is sometimes considered a member of. Sweet Leaf grows to a height of 1-3 metres, with an attractive upright form. It is best kept at a manageable height of around 2 metres, as taller plants can become unwieldy and susceptible to wind damage. Fortunately, with Sweet Leaf, pruning and harvesting can be done simultaneously. The foliage is highly ornamental, with elliptical, dark green leaves arranged alternately along the stems. Crimson flowers form along the stems, maturing into small white-pink fruits. Sweet Leaf can be used as a hedge and is also suitable for cultivation in containers.
