SUNSAPOTE

General Info – Sansapote, Monkey Apple, Chupa, Zapote Amarillo, Sonza

Native to the forests of Central America, the Sunsapote presents a unique opportunity for collectors of rare tropical fruits or tropical gardeners seeking an interesting addition to their garden.
While the Sunsapote’s fruits are seldom cultivated, they offer a delightful experience for gardeners. Despite its somewhat unattractive appearance, the fruit’s thick, brown-greyish skin serves as a protective layer for the fibrous, orange-yellow pulp beneath. Though somewhat fibrous, the fruit boasts a pleasantly sweet flavour akin to Pumpkin, Melon and Sapodilla. Ripening from Summer to Autumn after being held by trees for 9-12 months, the Sunsapote yields massive quantities of fruit once mature. Fruits are commonly eaten fresh but can also be made into jams or other desserts.
The Sunsapote bears fruit similar to Mangoes, being borne on large, decorative blooms that gracefully extend from the foliage’s edges. The abundance of fruit clusters, stemming from numerous white flowers, may weigh down branches, causing them to bend. Its dense growth habit and large, glossy narrow leaves, lends the Sunsapote a striking appearance, making it an ideal centerpiece in any garden. Commonly only 10-20m tall but occasionally towering up to 30-50 metres in height, this majestic tree is perfectly suited as a centrepoint for a garden. Sunsapote are a member of the Chrysobalanaceae, making them related to Olosapo and Cocoplum.
Native to the tropical lowlands of Central America, this species thrives in conditions like its natural habitat, displaying minimal tolerance for other climates. Ideally, the Sunsapote should be positioned in a protected yet sunny location, with some tolerance for drought owing to its native adaptation to dry seasons. Requiring relatively little care, these plants exhibit resilience against pests and diseases. A moist, well-drained soil is ideal.
While perhaps not suitable for individuals in marginal climates or with limited space, the Sunsapote remains a distinctive plant boasting numerous ornamental qualities and fruit worthy of admiration and collection.
