General Info – Sudachi

Sudachi are a unique Japanese Citrus, prized for their zesty aroma and refreshingly sour flavour. Not consumed as by itself like a Mandarin or Grapefruit, their juice is used to flavour food, often as an alternative to Vinegar and can be used to make the famous Japanese citrus-based sauce, Ponzu which is used as a dressing or dipping sauce. Sudachi are ready for harvest in Autumn, with fruits reaching the size of a large Calamondin and being more juicy than the Yuzu and significantly less seedy, occasionally being seedless. Sudachi are commonly picked green or only slightly coloured as their flavour can diminish once fully ripened, being likened to a sour Mandarin and consequently palatable but rather undesirable. Sudachi slices can be used as a garnish similar to Lime or Lemon wedges. A unique alternative to growing more common Citrus like Lemon or Lime.
As with many commonly cultivated Citrus, the Sudachi is a complex hybrid, being the product of a Yuzu and another undetermined Citrus species. The Yuzu itself is a naturally occuring hybrid of original citrus species Citrus reticulata (Mandarin) and Citrus cavaleriei (Ichang Papeda). While the undetermined Citrus is thought to be similar to Japanese varieties of Citrus reticulata (Mandarin) or Citrus aurantium (Bitter Orange) which is itself a cross between Citrus maxima (Pomelo) and Citrus reticulata (Mandarin).
Like all Citrus trees, Sudachi thrives in full sun, well-draining soil, consistent moisture, and regular fertilisation, conditions which will produce a healthy specimen and ample crops. While Sudachi prefers more tropical conditions compared to its relative, Yuzu, it maintains a similar cold tolerance, with mature plants capable of withstanding temperatures as low as -10°C. As a result, Sudachi can be grown in warm temperate to tropical climates and is marginally suitable for cool temperate regions.
Sudachi trees are vigorous growers, reaching heights of around 5 metres in favourable conditions. Like all citrus, they have attractive evergreen foliage and fragrant flowers that attract plenty of pollinators. However, their branches can be quite spiky, so they should not be planted near paths.
