General Info – Star Anise, Badian, Chinese Star Anise
A widely used tropical spice, Star Anise is known for its distinct star-shaped dried fruits, which give it the “Star” part of its name. Loved for its heady aroma and pungency, Star Anise has a subtly sweet and earthy flavour often compared to Licorice or Anise, as well as Clove and Cinnamon. It is a key component of Chinese five-spice powder and is common in the broth for the famous Vietnamese soup Pho. Additionally, Star Anise is used in South Asian dishes like Biryani and the spiced milk tea Masala Chai. Native to southern China and northern Vietnam, Star Anise is well-suited to both tropical and subtropical climates. Information regarding its frost and cold tolerance varies. Some sources suggest it can tolerate temperatures between -5 to -10 degrees Celsius, while others indicate it is not frost-tolerant. It is likely that Star Anise can tolerate brief, light frosts and would be marginal but viable in some temperate climates. The plant is not demanding regarding soil type and is largely adaptable as long as the soil has consistent moisture. Star Anise prefers acidic, well-drained loam soil. Star Anise develops into an attractive medium-sized tree with glossy, lance-shaped olive-green leaves and fragrant, showy white-yellow flowers. The trees can be pruned into a hedge form or left to grow in their natural shape. An aromatic spice perfect for creating flavoursome, authentic dishes, the Star Anise is an ideal tree to cultivate in many climates.
