General Info – Soncoya, Sincuya, Cabeza de Negro
The Soncoya is a unique member of the Annona family and a rare gem beyond its local range, absent from markets or stores, yet undeniably delightful and a prized addition to any tropical backyard. Soncoya trees yield oval fruits that bear a resemblance to Rollinia, characterised by their hooklike spikes covering the surface. In contrast to Rollinia, Soncoya fruits maintain their firm texture as they mature, presenting a challenge in handling the spiky, tough skin even when fully ripe, akin to the experience with a Durian. Inside the Soncoya is an aromatic, vibrant orange flesh, reminiscent of Soursop being soft yet fibrous, with a sweet, pleasing flavour reminiscent of Peach, Apricot, Papaya, and Mango. While not highly esteemed across its native range in the tropical lowlands of the Americas, Soncoya trees are locally cherished as dooryard additions or for sale in local markets. Once the juice and flavour are extracted, the Soncoya’s pleasant taste can be enjoyed in juices, smoothies, and milkshakes. Due to the lack of cultivation and specific varieties, individual seedlings and climates may greatly influence the taste and quality of Soncoya fruits. Soncoya thrives in tropical climates that experience consistent warmth year-round and ample rainfall for flowering and fruit set. Although they require ample rainfall, Soncoya are remarkably adaptable to differing rainfall paterns, tolerating dry periods typical of tropical wet and dry climates within their native range. Soncoya are not frost tolerant and may be damaged by cold temperatures below 5 degrees. They prefer slightly acidic, well-draining loam soil for optimal growth. Typically a small to medium-sized tree, reaching up to 10 metres in height, though commonly smaller, the Soncoya bears all the distinctive hallmarks of an Annona in its foliage and flowers. The Soncoya boasts large, papery leaves with visible veins and ridges, often twisting in shape, setting a striking contrast against its three-petaled flowers, which flaunt a captivating light pink to red center. An obscure and peculiar member of the Annona family, the Soncoya promises a diverse range of tastes among individual seedlings, making it a journey of discovery for those with a passion for Annona varieties.
