General Info – Soh Sang, Soh Shang, Bastard Oleaster

Soh Sang produces attractive, silver-speckled red fruits that resemble those of other Elaeagnus species. These elongated berries are similar in size to Grapes, with a jelly-like flesh and a large single seed. Their flavour is often described as a combination of Plum and Berry. The fruit is unpleasantly astringent when unripe but becomes only mildly astringent when fully ripe, offering a vibrant yet not overwhelming sourness, balanced by a pleasant sweetness. Soh Sang can be eaten raw on its own or paired with salt or sugar to neutralise the sour taste. It can also be used in juices or made into preserves such as jams and chutneys. Nutritionally, Soh Sang is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, calcium, potassium, and has anti-inflammatory properties. As a member of the Elaeagnus genus, Soh Sang is related to other edible species, including Goumi, Lingaro, and the Australian native Millaa Millaa.
Soh Sang is native to the slopes of the Himalayas, growing at elevations above 2,500 metres and thriving in a range of climates, from warm temperate to subtropical. While it can tolerate light frost, heavy frosts may cause damage. Soh Sang prefers well-draining soil but can manage in dry and infertile conditions with minimal fuss, making it a low-maintenance plant once established. It prefers full sun. Additionally, Soh Sang makes an excellent companion plant in orchards, as it has a symbiotic relationship with nitrogen-fixing bacteria that form nodules on its roots.
Soh Sang forms a compact shrub, typically growing to less than 3 metres in height and often as wide. Its compact nature makes it well-suited for container gardening. The evergreen leaves are ornamental, with a silver sheen on their underside, though the branches can be thorny. A prolific fruit bearer, Soh Sang produces creamy flowers that bloom from the nodes along its branches.
