General Info – Small Leaf Tamarind, Small-Leaved Tamarind
An ornamental rainforest tree native to the subtropics of Northern NSW and South Eastern Queensland, the Small Leaf Tamarind yields some of Australia’s finest bushfoods, guaranteed to infuse any dish with a delightful tang and spice. Identifying ripe fruits is effortless, as the green shell splits open to reveal vivid red capsules within, each containing a tangy, spicy yellow pulp with a delightful, distinct flavour and culinary versatility. Like its namesake, the Tamarind, the Small Leaf Tamarind can be transformed into a variety of preserves, from jams to chutneys and sauces. Although commonly likened to Tamarind, the Small Leaf Tamarind is in fact a member of the Sapindaceae family together with Lychee and Ackee. In the wild, trees can reach towering heights of up to 30m, although in cultivation it typically grows to around 10m, boasting a spreading crown and dense foliage of attractive, glossy green, curved leaves. Its evergreen presence makes it an ideal choice for providing shade and serving as a majestic centerpiece in any garden, especially when adorned with clusters of small white flowers and cream-brown fruits. Thriving in partial to full sun, the Small Leaf Tamarind prefers maturing from filtered shade, though young plants may suffer from sunburn if exposed too soon. Adaptable to various soil conditions and rainfall levels, it flourishes in subtropical rainforests. While there is partial drought tolerance, plants will benefit greatly from watering during dry periods. While it can tolerate light frosts, providing protection in cooler temperate climates ensures continued vitality. In mild but largely frost free temperate climates, the Large Leaf Tamarind is a more suitable option. Once mature, these trees produce an abundance of fruit with minimal maintenance required. For those cultivating large, native food forests or with a taste for unique, piquant bushfoods, the Small Leaf Tamarind is an essential addition.
