A vigorous, flavourful, and disease-resistant hybrid of multiple Rubus species, the Silvanberry is a delightful cross of the Marionberry and Boysenberry, the Boysenberry itself being a cross between Blackberry and Raspberry. Silvanberries were developed by the Australian Department of Agriculture at Silvan, Victoria in the 1970’s. Silvanberries are a delightful summer indulgence, whether enjoyed fresh from the cane, preserved through freezing for later consumption, incorporated into various sweet desserts like ice cream and pies, or transformed into delectable preserves such as jams. Silvanberry hold well on the cane. Harvest typically occurs early in the summer, and in subtropical regions, may even commence in late spring. Fruiting occurs on Floricanes (second year canes). Like most Rubus, the Silvanberry thrives vigorously in temperate climates, rapidly expanding through its root suckers and is best cultivated in containers or segregated areas where suckers can be managed. It is relatively undemanding to cultivate, necessitating only the management of its vigorous growth and occasional pruning of fruited canes. They prefer slightly acidic, fertile, well-draining soils, along with ample exposure to full sunlight, which encourages abundant fruiting. Water well during flowering and fruiting. Silvanberries benefit greatly from training and trellising to support both the weight of their fruits and canes, thereby reducing vulnerability to strong winds. Canes can reach up to 2.5m tall but can be pruned to prevent such an unwieldy size. With their vigorous growth and exquisite flavor, the Silvanberry stands out as a premier Rubus hybrid, perfectly suited for the busy gardener.
