General Info – Rumberry, Cambuizeiro, Guavaberry

A member of the Myrtaceae family native to the Caribbean and Tropical America, the Rumberry thrives both in the wild and under cultivation in its native region. The Rumberry is an exceptional addition to a garden for both its ornamental beauty and delicious, sub-acid berries.
Rumberries are highly ornamental, with a glossy skin and ranging in colour from dark blue to black, red, orange, or yellow. Each fruit contains only a solitary seed, resulting in a modest amount of translucent flesh that is highly flavourful. The pulp is highly aromatic with an acidic tang and pleasant sweetness similar to that of a Cherry Guava. Fruits are abundant in Vitamin C, but not as exceptionally high as their close relatives the Camu Camu. Rumberries can be used in jams, jellies, drinks, and liqueurs. Particularly famed in Puerto Rico for its use in Coquito, where it harmonises with Coconut Milk, Rum, Milk, and Spices.
Rumberry is adaptable to both full sun and partial shade. It can withstand short, light frosts once mature, although warm, frost-free climates are its distinct preference, with warm temperate regions also proving viable for cultivation. Rumberry thrives in slightly acidic, fertile, moist soils, but it can also tolerate less ideal conditions, including exposure to wind and moderate drought.
Like many Myrtle family members, the Rumberry boasts a highly ornamental form, with flaking bark, featuring contrasting light and dark shades and a rounded crown. Complementing this bark are small, glossy, evergreen leaves and striking flowers, each adorned with a profusion of long, white stamens, reminiscent of freshly fallen snow and with a pleasant fragrance. Rumberry will grow slowly into a compact shrub or small tree below 6m tall, but can also become a large specimen up to 20m tall. Owing to their slow growth, plants are well-suited for container cultivation.
With its unique ornamental features and distinctive fruits, the Rumberry stands as a captivating addition to any tropical garden.
