ROLLINIA

General Info – Rollinia, Brazillian Custard Apple, Biriba, Lemon Meringue Pie Fruit

The Rollinia Deliciosa is well-deserving of its scientific name, truly living up to its delicious reputation. Less commonly known by its more recent scientific name, Annona Mucosa, this moniker hints at its relation to other Annonas, albeit with a somewhat unflatteringly reference to the somewhat mucus-like texture of its poorer varieties.
Rollinias are adored for their smooth, gritless texture, setting them apart from some of their Annona relatives like Cherimoya which have a Pear-like gritty texture that may be less appealing . The succulent, aromatic melt-in-your-mouth white flesh of Rollinia is creamy, sweet and tangy often drawing comparisons to the indulgent flavours and texture of a Lemon meringue pie. Growing up to 12cm long, the fruits skin ripen to a light yellow hue, with soft spines that darken to black when bruised. Whether consumed fresh, chilled, or transformed into refreshing drinks or delectable desserts, the Rollinia’s exquisite flavour never fails to impress. Rollinia can be harvested when slightly underripe if required, as they will continue to ripen after picking. However, they have a brief shelf life once fully ripe and should be consumed within a week of reaching full ripeness, an easy task given their delectable nature. One of the most exciting tropical fruits, the Rollinia is sure to become popular across the tropics and subtropics.
Rollinia are a fast growing tree, reaching up to 12 metres in height with a spreading growth habit. Thriving in highly tropical climates, mature trees exhibit tolerance only to light frosts, necessitating a consistently warm environment for optimal health and fruit production. Rollinia can be grown as far south as Sydney, with a specimen in the Botanic Gardens, although their growth is slow and they may not set fruit. Ideally, they prefer fertile, well-draining loamy soil and a position bathed in full sun, though partial shade is also acceptable in tropical climates. In moist conditions, Rollinia tolerate a range of soils, including calcareous and sandy types, with periodic flooding being tolerated in their native habitats. High humidity is paramount for successful pollination, as the distinct tri-petalled, slender-stemmed Annona flowers may struggle to pollinate under low humidity conditions. Resplendent in its Annona-like conical form, adorned with attractive, large, ribbed light green leaves, the Rollinia stands out as one of the most delightful members of the Annona family.
With its smooth, luscious flesh and rapid growth, the Rollinia is a worthy addition to any expansive garden, promising a delectable harvest and a feast for the senses.
