General Info – Quince

The Quince, originating in West Asia, is an ancient fruit highly valued for its pectin-rich flesh and resilience, traits that continue to produce modern admirers.
Botanically a Pome, akin to Pears and Apples, Quince fruits exhibit a size and appearance reminiscent of a blend of the two, albeit larger and more irregular in shape. Unlike its cultivated botanical cousins, Quinces have a pronounced astringency making then unsuitable for fresh eating once initially ripe, however, they can further ripen into a sweeter, softer state through bletting. With their high pectin content, Quince fruits lend themselves perfectly to processing into delectable products such as jams, jellies, and notably, Quince Cheese, known as ‘Marmalade’ in Portugese. They can also be stewed with honey or sugar, for example in Southern Chile they make a dessert Murta con Membrillo, which involves stewing Quince with Chilean Guava and Sugar, occasionally flavoured with Cinnamon and Orange zest.
Quince trees are hardy specimens, capable of enduring challenging conditions, thriving in environments too harsh for many Apple and Pear varieties, it embraces hot summers and exhibits resilience against drought and severe cold. Established trees will tolerate both dry and heavy soils once established but prefer a slightly acidic loam. A full sun position is important. Pear trees are often grafted onto Quince rootstocks, leveraging their hardiness against nature’s extremes.
In addition to its practical merits, the Quince boasts ornamental allure. Adorned with exquisite pink and white blossoms and sporting a twisted, spreading form, it serves as a captivating focal point in any landscape. Its adaptable nature facilitates easy training for compact growth, ideal for maintenance and harvesting, with heights typically kept below 2-3m. Even when not bearing fruit, the Quince remains a spectacle, gracing gardens with its delicate white flowers and lush, dark-green foliage.
While producing delicious preserves from its fruits may demand some effort, the Quince tree proves a charming, low-maintenance addition to any setting, resilient against the elements and a delight to behold year-round.
