General Info – Pulasan

The often-overlooked member of the Soapberry family, the Pulasan remains relatively unknown outside of Southeast Asia, despite its superb quality.
Although overshadowed by its more commonly cultivated relatives, this tropical gem is often considered the sweetest fruit among its kind, surpassing even the beloved Lychee and Rambutan in sweetness while maintaining a similar flavour profile and juiciness, although with a slight Passionfruit flavour. In appearance, the Pulasan resembles a large Bayberry, with its striking red-black skin of firm but blunt, fleshy spines encasing the juicy, translucent fruit within. The tougher skin of the Pulasan serves as a natural defense, rendering it more resilient to pests like bats, which may find it challenging to penetrate the fruit. Much like its kin, Pulasan fruits are delectable when enjoyed fresh and can be transformed into delightful sweets and preserves.
A native of the ultratropical lowland rainforests of Malaysia, the Pulasan thrives in conditions akin to those preferred by the Rambutan. The cold hardiness of the Pulasan is relatively unknown but is potentially greater than the Rambutan, although undoubtedly poorer than that of Lychee and especially Longan. Ideal growing conditions for the Pulasan include year-round tropical temperatures, high humidity, and ample rainfall, though it can tolerate periods of dryness and has been reported to flower best after a dry period. Well-drained, slightly acidic, and fertile soils, supplemented with regular fertilisation, are optimal, as is a position in full sunlight.
Under ideal conditions, Pulasan plants can reach heights of up to 15m or potentially even taller. Beyond its fruit-bearing qualities, the Pulasan exhibits ornamental appeal with its bushy growth habit and adorned with curly, dark-green, glossy leaves featuring a hairy underside. The fruits, prominently displayed amidst panicles of flowers on terminal growth, make for an attractive sight.
Pulasan offers a bounty of delicious fruits that are sure to delight any lover of Lychee, Longan, or Rambutan.
