Perfume Guava are not among the larger of Guava’s with fruits only reaching the size of a golf ball, being slightly larger than the Yellow Cherry Guava but with a flattened form, although they are some varieties with larger fruits. Nevertheless they are absolutely flavour packed with fully ripe fruits they have a wonderful lemonade flavour in their creamy pulp. Perfume Guava are a truly delightful fruit being juicy, sweet and aromatic, the perfect choice for those who can otherwise find Guavas bland or dull. In their native habitat, fruits are quite enjoyed, often harvested from the wild or cultivated, with the bountiful harvests of trees gathered. Aside from fresh eating, like other Guavas they can also be juiced, made into preserves or added to ice cream. Although native to the true tropics of South America, the Perfume Guava—like many other Guava varieties—has reasonable cold tolerance. Once established, it can handle the occasional light frost, particularly with some canopy protection. These trees thrive in hot, humid conditions with high rainfall, which best replicate their natural habitat. Slightly acidic, well-drained soils are ideal and will support healthy, vigorous growth and good fruit production. The Perfume Guava is an attractive tree that can reach heights of up to 10 metres when mature, though it can easily be kept much lower with regular pruning. It stands out for its lush, ornamental foliage—more so than many other guava species—with large, deeply veined, glossy green leaves. Adding to its visual appeal are its bright white flowers, typical of the Myrtle family.
