General Info – Pepino Berry, Tzimbalo

The Pepino Berry, also known as ‘Tzimbalo’, is an excellent choice for filling in gaps in any subtropical to frost-free temperate garden.
Similar in taste and appearance to its more renowned namesake, the Pepino, this smaller variety can be considered its compact sibling, or potentially is its wild ancestor. In terms of flavour and texture, the fruit of the Pepino Berry closely resembles that of the Pepino, boasting a juicy, melon-like taste. However, they often possess a distinct, slightly tart undertone, delivering a delightful sweet and sour experience. Pepino Berry are similar in size to a Cherry and can often have attractive violet stripes.
The Pepino Berry maintains a condensed growth pattern similar to its counterpart, making it particularly suitable for small spaces and container cultivation. Its appearance clearly identifies it as a member of the Nightshade family, characterised by smaller foliage than the standard Pepino.
Originating from the temperate, frost-free Andes region, the Pepino Berry adapts well to various frost-free climates, tolerating brief periods of light frost. Optimal growth is achieved with full sun exposure, regular watering, and well-drained soil, leading to fruiting even within the plant’s first year from seed.
With its rapid fruiting and suitability for compact spaces, the Pepino Berry presents itself as a valuable addition to any garden.
