General Info – Peanut Tree, Dundil, Red-fruited Kurrajong

Originating from the rainforests of Northern Australia, the Peanut Tree is renowned for its delectable nuts.
Its distinctive orange or red ovular capsules split open when ripe, revealing numerous small black seeds with a delightful, Peanut-like flavour. The thin, black paper-like skin should be removed as it is unpleasantly bitter. These seeds ripen during the Summer-Autumn months and are perfect for salads, roasted and enjoyed as a standalone snack, or as a topping for desserts such as Ice Cream or Sundaes.
Endemic to the rainforests of New Guinea and Northern Australia, the Peanut Tree thrives in tropical climates, tolerating only light frosts once mature. In cooler regions, it may shed its leaves during Autumn while seed pods finish maturing. Optimal growing conditions include full sun exposure, ample watering, and well-draining soil. Peanut Trees exhibit resilience to cyclones, making them well-suited to withstand strong winds. Mature plants demonstrate tolerance to sandy soils and drought conditions.
Peanut trees grow rapidly with trees reaching heights of up to 20 metres but more commonly only 10m. Plants can serve as valuable shade providers or screening trees, with their striking ornamental features also attracting birds and pollinating insects. Fragrant creamy-white flowers emerge in clusters during Summer, attracting native wildlife and pollinators, while the dark green, heart-shaped leaves provide a stunning contrast to the vibrant red capsules. Peanut Trees are ideal for native gardens still seeking tasty bush tucker. Sterculia quadrifida is a member of the Malvaceae family together with other tropical trees such as Durian, Cupuassu, Kola Nut and the native Boab.
Appealing both visually and to beneficial wildlife, the Peanut Tree is an excellent choice for gardeners seeking a nutty flavour and a distinctive, eye-catching tree for their landscape.
