General Info – Papayuelo, Mountain Papaya
A relative of the Papaya indigenous to the Andean Highlands of Colombia, the Papayuelo offers a resilient alternative suitable for more temperate climates.
Papayuelo fruits are typically smaller than those of Papaya or Babaco but may grow up to 20cm long and are far larger than the berry sized fruits of the Oak Leaved Papaya. Ripe fruits emit a delightful tropical fragrance and are available in a spectrum of colours ranging from red and yellow to purple. Papayuelo has a mildly acidic to sweet flavour reminiscent of Papaya, Babaco, Apple and Strawberry. Fruits are commonly used in juices, beverages, or as a cooked vegetable. Given that Papayuelo is predominantly a wild species, taste profiles may vary significantly from sweet to bland but better cultivated forms are available.
Originating from the temperate/subtropical highlands of the northern Andes, Papayuelo thrives in the year-round, humid, mild climate fostered by its tropical latitude and high elevation. Alongside its cousin Babaco, Papayuelo stands out as a premier Carica/Vasoncellea option for mild temperate climates, showcasing resilience against cooler conditions, mild droughts, and potentially even light frosts. While fertile, well-draining soils are preferable, Papayuelo reportedly displays greater tolerance to poorly draining soils compared to its well-known relatives, Babaco and Papaya. Papayuelo exhibit exceptional fruiting capabilities and are also diecious, necessitating both male and female plants for pollinationg, meaning that large quantities of fruits will be produced.
In terms of appearance, Papayuelo bears a resemblance to its aforementioned relatives, characterized by an upright structure and mostly unbranched stem, with unique foliage concentrated at the plant’s apex, giving it the distinct umbrella form. Although capable of reaching heights of up to 8m, they rarely exceed 5m and it is advisable to maintain Papayuelo at a manageable height for ease of harvest.
Boasting a distinctive tropical appearance coupled with greater hardiness compared to many related species, Papayuelo proves itself an excellent choice for collectors and warm temperate gardeners alike.
