General Info – Orange Berry, Pink Fruited Lime Berry
The Orange Berry produces small, light orange to pink berries that resemble miniature citrus fruits. These berries have a flavour profile combining citrus and honey-like sweetness with resinous undertones. They can be eaten as a snack or made into jam. While the plant can fruit year-round, it mainly fruits from autumn to spring. Orange Berry belongs to the Glycosmis genus, which is part of the Rutaceae (Citrus) family, along with other native Australian members like Lemon Aspen and Finger Lime. Native to Southeast Asia and tropical Australia, Orange Berry grows in dry rainforests, monsoon forests, and coastal scrub. It prefers moderate water, well-drained soil, frost-free conditions, and can tolerate partial shade or full sun. The Orange Berry is a versatile plant, ideal for filling understory spaces or sunny locations, making it well-suited to urban gardens. Hardy and evergreen, it features ornamental, glossy, and aromatic foliage. The plant can grow into a medium-sized shrub or a small tree, typically remaining under 4 metres in height. In spring, tiny, fragrant white flowers appear, resembling those of other citrus plants. The Orange Berry also serves as a host plant for the Canopus Swallowtail butterfly and is excellent for supporting native insect species.
