NATAL PLUM

General Info – Natal Plum, Carissa, Large num-num

A resilient coastal hedging shrub, the Natal Plum occupies a unique niche where gardeners often turn to non-fruiting ornamentals.
The succulent, sub-acid fruit of the Natal Plum are Vitamin C rich and possess a delightful Cranberry and Raspberry flavour, making them a delectable choice for fresh consumption. Natal Plum are similar in size to large Blackberries with a glossy, crimson exterior and boasting an excellent seed-to-flesh ratio. In addition to being enjoyed fresh, Natal Plums can frozen, dried or transformed into various products such as jams, yoghurts, ice cream and sauces. It is important to allow fruits to ripen fully in order to minimise the presence of the unpleasant latex within the vivid red pulp.
Well-adapted to coastal environments, Natal Plum exhibit exceptional resistance to both wind and salt spray, standing out as one of the rare fruit-bearing species that can withstand and thrive with coastal exposure. Moreover, Natal Plums display a remarkable tolerance to droughts and overall hardiness, thriving in various soil types, albeit with a preference for well-drained conditions. Optimal fruit yields are achieved in environments with abundant rainfall and fertile loam soils. Indigenous to the subtropics of Coastal South Africa, the Natal Plum demonstrates adaptability to milder temperate climates and reportedly endures temperatures as low as -5 degrees once mature. However, it flourishes best in frost-free climates, as young growth can be adversely affected by temperatures below -2 degrees. The Natal Plum belongs to the rare category of ornamental, evergreen, cold-hardy fruiting trees, joining the ranks of other exceptional plants like Carob, Olive, and Pitanguinha.
Even with its robust nature, the Natal Plum doesn’t compromise on ornamental appeal, boasting a distinctive and visually pleasing appearance that complements any garden. Naturally growing into a shrub commonly between 1-4m tall, it can be easily pruned into a dense hedge, forming an effective barrier with its sharp spines. The Natal Plum produces flowers and fruits throughout the year, featuring star-like, fragrant white blossoms and oval berries ranging from pink to dark red. These fruits adorn long stems covered in evergreen, glossy dark green leaves, creating a visually striking contrast with the flowers and fruits of the plant itself. While not suitable for high-activity areas due to its spines, the Natal Plum excels as a privacy hedge or featured shrub, with the recommendation to plant two together for cross-pollination.
As the ideal fruiting option for privacy or security hedges adaptable to diverse conditions, the Natal Plum stands as an exceptionally valuable choice for coastal gardeners.
