General Info – Nashi Pear, Asian Pear, Chinese Pear, Sand Pear

The Nashi, or Asian Pear, combines the juiciness and taste of a European Pear with the hard, crunchy flesh of an Apple, creating a delectable combination that can excite even those ambivalent to both fruits.
These fruits are excellent for fresh eating and can also be used in baking recipes similar to Apples and Pears such as Tarts, Muffins and Pies. Additionally, they can be preserved through drying and bottling. With a range of varieties available, the shape, flavour, and texture of Nashi pears can vary considerably. For example, the Hosui produces large crops of bronze-skinned fruits that are delectable juicy and sweet, while the caramel-skinned, apple-shaped Nijisseiki offers crispiness and a strong flavour. Nashi Pears ripen across Summer and Fall, dependent on the variety, but are also excellent for storage, lasting between three to six months in the fridge (dependent on the variety).
The mature height of Nashi pear trees varies based on rootstock and pruning. Trees are available on dwarf rootstocks for those looking to grow in containers or with limited space, keeping the plants below 5 metres tall. As with many members of the Pyrus genus, the Nashi Pear is highly ornamental and is a beautiful sight when in full bloom. Nashi pears can be cultivated as free-standing trees or espaliered for both a space conscious and beautiful plant.
Originating in temperate East Asia, the Nashi Pear has a range of cultivars commonly available, suitable for both high-chill temperate climates and low-chill subtropical climates. Growing requirements are similar to Apples and Pears, needing moderate watering, full sun, and good drainage. Plants can tolerate clay soils well. While some varieties are partially self-pollinating, cultivating two different varieties for cross-pollination will greatly increase fruit set, this can even be a European Pear provided it flowers at the same time. The Nashi Pear is a delightful fruit with a range of delicious varieties and an ornamental bloom.
