One of the many delicious and enticing Eugenia species, the Nangapire has a slightly acidic, sweet, and pleasant flavour, often compared to a Sweet Cherry or, in terms of Eugenia varieties, the Cherry of the Rio Grande. The fruit is about the size of a large Blueberry, with soft, juicy flesh that is tender to the touch. Like Mulberries, it can stain hands and clothes. Nangapire fruits are red-skinned and have an irregular shape, resembling the Cedar Bay Cherry. They are typically eaten fresh off the bush as a tasty snack, but can also be made into preserves, which is a great way to use the abundant crop. A rare Eugenia species, the Nangapire is definitely worth trying, especially for those who enjoy the flavour of other Eugenia fruits or find them easy to grow. Native to the subtropical regions of South America, the Nangapire can be found in Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, and Paraguay. It is adaptable to a range of climates, from tropical to subtropical, and even certain warm temperate climates. It is reported to tolerate brief temperatures as low as -4°C. While it is not poorly suited to partial shade, it thrives in full sun exposure and is easily cultivated under these conditions. The optimal growing medium is deep, loamy soil with good drainage. Although the Nangapire is not listed as a weed in Australia, it has the ability to self-seed prolifically and is easily dispersed by birds. To prevent the plant from becoming invasive and potentially harming local ecosystems, gardeners should net fruiting plants. The Nangapire forms an evergreen shrub or small tree, growing up to 5 metres tall, though it is often smaller with a shrubby growth habit that makes it ideal for hedging. It is also well-suited to container cultivation, where it fruits well. When in bloom, it puts on a spectacular display, often flowering twice a year. The fluffy white flowers, which cover the stems, are eye-catching and attract a variety of pollinators, while also emitting a delightful, sweet fragrance.
