General Info – Nam Nam, Namu-namu

The Nam Nam is an appealing cauliflorous tree ideal for tropical gardens producing highly valued, edible seedpods.
The Nam Nam is a a tropical member of the Fabaceae (Legume) family, making it related to others such as Tamarind and Carob which are also cultivated for their seedpods. Nam Nam are locally cherished, being a versatile ingredient for both culinary and medicinal purposes. Nam Nam produce kidney-shaped fruits, with the edible seedpod containing relatively large seeds within. The edible seedpod ripens to a yellow-brownish colour and is both aromatic and juicy with a flavour similar to Carambola and Green Mango. Initially tart when immature, the pods gradually mellow in flavour as they ripen but retain a pleasantly sharp tang even at full ripeness. Nam Nam can be consumed in a variety of manners, either fresh in salads, added to juices, made into pickles or candied in syrup for a sweet dessert or snack.
Originating from the tropical, wet lowlands of peninsular Malaysia, the Nam Nam thrives in both consistently moist and humid climates and also monsoonal climates with distinct dry seasons. Optimal growth conditions include full sun exposure and a slightly acidic, well-draining but moist soil. Nam Nam are wind resistant and can endure moderately exposed positions. While there is speculation about its potential role as a nitrogen-fixing plant due to its membership in the Fabaceae family, conclusive evidence is currently lacking.
Although its fruit may appear unattractive and dull, Nam Nam itself boasts a handsome appearance, characterized by a large canopy, dense growth and charming rosy-pink new foliage. True to its name, the Nam Nam has a cauliflorous nature, bearing small pink blossoms and fruit along its stems and main branches. Nam Nam can be either a small, compact tree only 3m tall but can reach up to 15m metres tall or be anywhere in-between. For those seeking a small, versatile tree with ornamental and practical appeal in tropical climates, the Nam Nam stands as a compelling option.
Widely cultivated for ornamental purposes, the Nam Nam thrives in tropical gardens, offering both aesthetic value and practical benefits.
