General Info – Monkey Orange, Natal Orange, Maboque, Groenklapper

Beloved by the wildlife inhabiting the Savanna and Woodlands of Africa, the Monkey Orange earns its name not just for the monkeys enamoured with its fruit but for its delectable qualities.
With a succulent, sub-acid pulp and a natural affinity for seasonally wet and dry climates, the Monkey Orange thrives in Australia where few others can. The Grapefruit sized fruits, encased in a thick, woody shell, ripens to a deep yellow, standing out conspicuously on the often defoliated tree, reminiscent of Persimmons. The Orange sub-acid flesh of fruits is highly esteemed throughout its native range, with the fruits commonly harvested from the wild, though cultivation is steadily on the rise. Monkey Orange are highly nutritional and in addition to fresh-eating they are commonly preserved through sun-drying or transforming the fruit into alcohol. It’s crucial to note that only the pulp is edible, as the numerous seeds are poisonous and should be avoided.
Originating from the woodlands and savannahs of tropical Africa, the Monkey Orange natively experiences seasonal rainfall, exhibiting prolific flowering and fruiting after substantial rainfalls following extended dry periods, to which it shows remarkable tolerance. Plants thrive even in poor soils and exposed positions, though sandy-loam soils promote optimal growth. The Monkey Orange is a dry season deciduous tree, natively experiencing distinct dry seasons and droughts followed by prolific rainfall. Light, brief frosts are tolerated once mature.
Its ornamental appeal is evident when it reshoots, featuring elliptic, pale green leaves that transform into dark green and glossy foliage when mature, creating an alluring contrast against the yellow fruits. These trees can reach heights of up to 9 metres, boasting a flat canopy. The creamy-green flowers are borne in dense clusters.
A no-fuss, exotic species ideally suited to the seasonally wet and dry climates of North Australia, the Monkey Orange captivates with its wildlife allure and culinary potential.
