General Info – Midyim Berry, Midgen Berry

Versatile and delectable, this native of South-East Queensland serves as an exceptional hedging plant, well-suited for any garden, be it ornamental or productive.
The Midyim Berry is highly regarded as a bushfood, offering a sweet and slightly spicy flavour reminiscent of Blueberries, Ginger, and Eucalyptus. Best enjoyed fresh from the plant, the berries make for an excellent garden snack, readily foraged from the backyard. The small, white speckled berries are similar in appearance to many forms of the Lilly Pilly and are profusely available from late Summer to early Autumn. If there is an over-abundance for fresh eating, they can also be made into preserves or used in salads.
Midyim Berries prove to be ideal for edible landscaping due to their hardiness and suitability for narrow spaces and borders. These shapely plants form compact, low-growing shrubs well-suited to making box or low-lying hedges to line paths. Plants become adorned with ornamental white flowers that showcase prominent white stamens, a characteristic trait of Myrtaceae. The glossy, dark green, lanceolate leaves are arranged oppositely along branches, with new growth displaying an attractive burgundy-copper hue. In full sun, the Midyim Berry takes on a more compact, shrub-like form, whereas in partial shade, it develops a more open, spreading structure. Midyim Berry can form a thornless, hedging alternative to the also edible native Finger Lime. Minimal maintenance is necessary, but pruning can be performed to achieve the desired shape.
Like many native species, Midyim Berries are resilient in various conditions, though they thrive in moist, well-draining soil. They thrive in sandy coastal soils as long as salt exposure is moderated. The Midyim Berry is native to a variety of environments, including scrublands, rainforest fringes, heath areas, and open woodlands. While they thrive with consistent rainfall throughout the year, they also exhibit tolerance to drought conditions. Light frosts are generally well-tolerated, but exposure to more moderate frosts is undesirable.
Well-suited for landscaping purposes along both the east and west coasts, the Midyim Berry stands as a perfect, native substitute for traditional berries, enhancing both aesthetics and functionality in your garden.
