General Info – Maypop, Purple Passionflower, True Passionflower, Wild Apricot

The Maypop, a cold-hardy cousin of the beloved Passionfruit (Passiflora Edulis), hails from the Southeastern region of North America, where it is admired for its striking, captivating flowers and flavourful fruit.
Maypop fruits share a resemblance with other Passiflora varieties, with an ovular shape and green-yellow skin, but are distinct in their soft skin, easily pulled apart by hand. Within, the highly aromatic pulp is a pale yellow hue, bursting with the flavour of a tropical cocktail—combining Passionfruit, Strawberry, Banana, and Soursop. While Maypops offer a more tart profile than conventional Passionfruit, this characteristic makes them perfect for flavouring beverages, desserts, and crafting preserves.
In contrast to its more renowned tropical relatives, the Maypop originates from the Southern-Central United States, where the cold winters are marked by frosts and occasional snow. To adapt to these harsh Winters, Maypop will dieback to its root system, only to resurge vigorously once Spring arrives. Maypop plants are resilient across various conditions, exhibiting tolerance to different soil types and fertility levels, though they prefer moist, well-drained soil. For optimal growth and fruit production, ample sunlight and a supportive structure for climbing are essential. Maypops will grow to the size of the support structure they’re provided, ideally one at a manageable height for easy harvesting and netting if required. Resembling other Passiflora species, Maypop plants are robust growers, sometimes exhibiting vigorous suckering. In form and appearance, the Maypop closely resembles the more prevalent Passionfruit. It features three-lobed leaves, eye-catching purple-white flowers, and tendrils that facilitate rapid climbing across support structures. Native wildlife, especially butterflies, are drawn to its flowers.
As an outstanding ornamental choice, particularly in regions with harsh winters, the Maypop serves as a commendable alternative to traditional Passionfruit varieties, ensuring beauty and productivity even in challenging climates.
