General Info – Maya Breadnut, Breadnut, Ramon, Ojoche, Ujuxte, Majo
Native to the lowland rainforest canopies of the Tropical Americas, the Maya Breadnut is a majestic, long-lived canopy tree renowned for its bountiful harvests once it reaches maturity. Referred to as ‘Ramon’ within its endemic range, the Maya Breadnut belongs to the Moraceae family, alongside Figs, Jackfruit, and Mulberries. After peeling away the edible, Citrus-flavored yellow flesh, the inner seed can be dried, with the 1-2cm nuts proving remarkably long-lasting. Its small, nutrient-rich nuts have been a staple in the diet of the Mayans for centuries, boasting high levels of fibre and essential nutrients such as Calcium, Potassium, Iron, and Zinc. When roasted, these nuts offer a Coffee or Chocolate-like flavour; when stewed or boiled, they develop a taste reminiscent of Potatoes. Additionally, they can be ground into a powder for various culinary uses. While Maya Breadnut plants thrive in tropical climates, they have are reported to have shown resilience in tolerating light, short frosts once mature. Although they typically prefer fertile, loamy soil, they can adapt to shallow, calcareous soils as long as they are well-drained. Once established, these plants have minimal water requirements and can withstand drought conditions, a trait inherited from their native habitats characterised by distinct seasonal dry seasons. Accepted rainfall can range from 500mm to 5000mm and plants exhibit tolerance to seasonal flooding which can occur during heavy tropical downpours. Maya Breadnut trees can reach towering heights of up to 30m when mature, seeking the full light of the forest canopy, however in cultivation they may remain smaller. When young, trees prefer partial or filtered shade, gradually transitioning to full sun as they mature into imposing shade trees. This characteristic makes them especially appealing to gardeners aiming to establish or utilise a distinct forest undercanopy. Plants have dark green foliage, an open crown and a robust, dark grey trunk that is prone to peeling and frequently exhibits substantial buttressing. With its minimal maintenance needs, towering stature, and abundant supply of delicious, long-lasting nuts, the Maya Breadnut is an excellent addition to any spacious, tropical food forest.
