General Info – Marang, Madang, Terap, Timadang, Johey Oak

The Marang is a captivatingly pungent and flavourful fruit that holds undeniable allure for any Artocarpus enthusiast.
As a member of the Artocarpus genus, the Marang is closely related to the similar Jackfruit and Chempedak, often considered the finest fruit within the genus. Marang fruits resemble their relatives in some aspects, although they are notably smaller, akin to Breadfruit in size, and adorned with fine, brushable hairlike spines. Delicately fragrant and tender, Marang fruits yield succulent, juicy arils that easily separate from the core. Though the arils may possess a slight sliminess, their taste is an addictive tropical cocktail, evoking comparisons to Jackfruit, Chempedak, and other tropical delights like Banana and Pineapple. Marang seeds are edible either roasted or boiled, and possess a nutty, sweet flavour likened to Chestnuts.
Native to the humid tropics of Southeast Asia, Marang thrives in tropical lowlands with consistent, ample rainfall and warm, humid conditions year-round. Exceptionally sensitive to cold, even more so than other members of the Artocarpus genus such as Breadfruit and Chempedak, Marang plants sustain damage at temperatures below 4 degrees Celsius. Marang prefer a well-draining, moist soil. Native to tropical rainforests, Marang will prefer partial shade or filtered sunlight when young, before maturing into full sun.
Marang plants boast large, leathery dark green leaves akin to Breadfruit, adding a lush tropical ambiance to any garden landscape. Given their potential to reach heights of up to 25 metres in their native habitat, ample space should be allocated to accommodate their full growth.
A prized delight for tropical fruit aficionados and a captivating ornamental addition to any garden, the Marang holds undeniable appeal for those enamored with the lush wonders and delicious flavours of the tropics.
