A close kin to the Mango, the Maprang hails from the monsoonal tropics of Southeast Asia, where it’s relished in both its ripe and unripe states. Maprang fruits boast a striking appearance, similar to that of a miniature Mangos, coupled with a juicy, sweet-to-tangy flavour reminiscent of its larger cousin. When green and unripe, these fruits are commonly incorporated into zesty salads or pickled for a tangy twist. Once matured, they are delectable when consumed fresh with the peel removed or prepared in syrup. Ripe fruits can be made into a refreshing juice while young leaves can be eaten in salads. Maprang trees, exhibit less resilience to cold temperatures compared to Mangos, tolerating only rare, brief, light frosts and preferring warmer, more humid climates year-round. Optimal growth conditions include slightly acidic, sandy-loam soils and a sheltered, sun-drenched location. Alkaline soils should be amended or avoided. Maprang can require up to 8 years before fruiting if cultivated from seed. While native to monsoonal areas which may experience a dry season, the Maprange strongly prefers consistent soil moisture throughout the year. Beyond their culinary appeal, Maprang trees serve admirably for ornamental purposes and offer excellent shade owing to their dense foliage and round crown. Maprang may reach towering heights over 20m tall, but can also mature to much more manageable heights between 3-6m, at which it is highly suitable for backyard cultivation. Their mature smooth, dark green foliage is similar to that of the Mango, while the drooping new growth is a beautiful, pale yellow that is near translucent. Flowering is not as spectacular as the related Mango, consisting of small, yellowish-green flowers. With its charmingly peculiar fruit, lush foliage, and tropical allure, the Maprang stands out as a delightful addition to any garden landscape.
