General Info – Mandarin Melon Berry, Cudrang, Kujibbong, Silkworm Thorn, Zhe

Native to the warm temperate climates of East Asia, the Mandarin Melon Berry is an excellent opportunity to round out a temperate garden with a rare, unique fruit. The Mandarin Melon Berry boasts remarkable hardiness and yields delicious berries, being a highly overlooked edible member of the Moraceae family, which includes well-known fruits like the Mulberry and Fig.
The Mandarin Melon Berry produces bountiful crops of sweet, uniquely shaped red berries. While unripe berries may lack flavour, a fully ripe Mandarin Melon Berry bursts with sweetness and juiciness, offering a flavour that blends between the tropical notes of Papaya, Rockmelon, and Watermelon, accompanied by a texture reminiscent of Strawberry. Mandarin Melon Berry are delicious eaten fresh and will ripen over a month, providing a long harvest season. Fruits can also be cooked or used to make wines. There is conflicting information on the exact botanical nature of fruits, with some noting them as ‘aggregate fruits’ like a Raspberry of Blackberry, while other sources note them as ‘multiple fruits’ which is the typical form of fruits within the Moraceae family.
Mandarin Melon Berry is a welcoming plant to cultivate, as it adapts well to various climates, thriving in both temperate and subtropical regions, where it exhibits deciduous and evergreen characteristics respectively. Optimal growth conditions are fertile, slightly acidic, well-draining soil, with a strict intolerance to waterlogging. While tolerant of partial shade, optimal fruiting occurs in full sun. Mandarin Melon Berry will thrive with moderate rainfall spread across the year. Plants face minimal threats from pests and diseases. Mandarin Melon Berry are extremely cold hardy, tolerating up to -28 degrees when dormant, well beyond any required cold tolerance in Australia.
Mandarin Melon Berry plants are typically dioecious, with male and female flowers growing on separate plants, requiring gardeners to cultivate specimens of both genders to ensure fruit production. However, certain specimens may exhibit hermaphroditic traits, bearing both male and female flowers, although at a distinct imbalance which may result in limited production. For optimal results, it is advisable to plant multiple specimens to enhance cross-pollination and maximise harvests.
The ornamental value of the Mandarin Melon Berry is evident, especially when adorned with clusters of vibrant red fruits, adding a delightful charm to any landscape. Plants will develop into large, spreading bush or small tree up to 6m tall. Due to their small form and slow-growing nature, Mandarin Melon Berry is well-suited to container cultivation. Foliage is ornamental and attractive, similar in appearance to an Avocado. The wind-pollinated flowers are rather inconspicious and much like the related Mulberry simply represent the immature, green, unripe form of the mature fruit.
An intriguing and rare addition to any temperate or subtropical garden, the Mandarin Melon Berry embodies low-maintenance elegance, serving as a delightful, undemanding small tree ideally suited for backyard cultivation.
