General Info – Malay Apple, Rose Apple, Mountain Apple, Otaheite Apple

With its crisp, refreshing fruit and attractive, conical growing pattern, the Malay Apple is one of the many Syzygium species worth cultivating for both its ornamental beauty and delicious fruit.
The egg-shaped fruits have a waxy, vivid red outer flesh and are close relative of Syzygiums such as Wax Jambu and Bell Apple. Similar to other Syzygium fruits, the Malay Apple offers a slightly sweet and acidic flavour with a juicy, crisp texture. It serves as an excellent, refreshing snack when chilled on a summer’s day, but can also be enjoyed stewed, added to salads for a delightful crunch, or transformed into a spiced jam (spices such as Cloves and Ginger go well).
Native to the tropics of Southeast Asia, the Malay Apple is more sensitive to cold than other Syzygium varieties, thriving in hot, tropical climates but being marginal in cool, subtropical climates. Malay Apples are adaptable to various soil conditions but thrive best in regions with high and consistent rainfall throughout the year, as they do not bear fruit during dry periods although they will tolerate them. While plants can withstand some degree of waterlogging, they thrive best in well-draining, loamy soil and full sun exposure. Under these conditions, they exhibit vigorous growth and abundant fruiting.
Malay Apple are worth growing for their ornamental value, with these evergreen trees assuming a shapely, conical form. Exceptional specimens can reach heights of up to 30m, but more commonly mature to heights between 10-15m. Malay Apple have large, lush, glossy foliage. Plants are most spectacular during flowering as the trees are adorned with clusters of small pink flowers featuring long stamens reminiscent of Callistemon blooms. Flowering can occur multiple times a year, resulting in multiple crops across a year.
While not ideal for cooler, marginal climates, the Malay Apple remains a delectable and worthwhile addition to any tropical garden with ample space.
