General Info – Saba Nut, French Peanut, Malabar Chestnut
The Saba Nut stands out as a stunningly ornate, expansive evergreen tree, making it an ideal choice for providing ample shade while also yielding sizable seed pods filled with delectable nuts reminiscent of Peanuts in flavour. The fruits, often reaching the size of tennis balls, split open upon ripening to reveal multiple sizable seeds. These nuts, akin to Peanuts when raw and reminiscent of Chestnuts when cooked, offer a tasty nut whether enjoyed alone or incorporated into various dishes. Saba Nuts boast high levels of oil, protein, and fats, rendering them an exceptional choice for gardeners in tropical regions seeking a highly nutritious nut. It shares a close relationship with the Guiana Chestnut (often being confused for it) and likewise hails from the tropical regions of South America, typically thriving along waterways or on riverbanks that experience periodic flooding. This adaptability renders the plant tolerant to intermittent inundation and poorly drained soils, although it thrives best with a deep, loam soil, consistent rainfall or access to water without being submerged. Saba Nut are drought resistant, fast growing and tolerate both full sun or partial shade. With its elongated, dark green compound leaves, the Saba Nut presents a visually striking sight, especially when set against its large brown fruits. However, it truly captivates with its magnificent crimson blooms boasting slender, elongated petals that sharply contrast against the white stamen. Saba Nut can reach up to 18m tall but will commonly remain at a more manageable, lower height. In regions where alternatives to traditional temperate nuts are scarce, the Saba Nut emerges as a valuable, nutritious alternative, enhancing both the culinary and aesthetic landscape with its delicious offerings and ornamental beauty.
