General Info – Limoncillo, Mexican Achachairu, Luc’s Garcinia, Mexican Mangosteen
Limoncillo is often considered a superior fruit among the Garcinia species, often said to be better than other highly regarded varieties such as Achacha or Purple Mangosteen. Commonly likened to the related Achacha due to its similar form, Limoncillo boasts a bold, sweet, and tart flavor with a delightful Lemony citrus taste. Fruits are significantly larger than the Achacha, reaching up to the size of a tennis ball, and have a noticeably thinner skin and a better flesh-to-seed ratio. Limoncillo is reportedly one of the hardiest Garcinia species, notably with better cold tolerance than Achacha, making it suitable for milder climates alongside Yellow Mangosteen and Lemon Drop Mangosteen. Mature plants can reportedly tolerate temperatures as low as -3 degrees Celsius but benefit from cold protection when young. Limoncillo prefers partial shade or filtered sunlight during its initial years, during which it grows quite slowly. It can thrive in both wet and dry tropical climates, provided it receives ample watering in drier conditions. With their lush, waxy evergreen foliage and spreading form, Limoncillo develop into attractive specimens around 5m tall. While foliage is a deep green when mature, the new growth has an attractive pale gold and light pink colour. Dense clusters of white flowers emerge along leaf axils.
