General Info – Limeberry

A rare tropical member of the Rutaceae family, closely related to the Citrus genus, the Limeberry is an exceptional ornamental hedging plant for tropical climates that also bears edible berries.
In terms of appearance, the Limeberry closely resembles a miniature Citrus, featuring small, glossy, dark green leaves, white citrus-like flowers with a pleasant fragrance, and small red berries similar to a Panama Berry, but with more noticeable Citrus features on the surface. Limeberry form a tidy, small shrub, often below 3m tall. These plants can be trained into a hedge, which, considering the spines of the Limeberry, makes it a suitable choice for a security hedge.
While the Limeberry is not widely revered and cultivated for its edibility, its fruits boast a pleasant sweet, Lime taste, coupled with a slight bitterness. The aromatic berries can be transformed into Jams and Marmalades in addition to snacking on the fresh fruits.
Indigenous to the tropics of Southeast Asia, the Limeberry thrives in tropical conditions more than other commonly cultivated Citrus varieties. These plants demand well-draining soil, as they are intolerant of waterlogging, especially during cooler periods. Optimal growth is achieved with regular rainfall, slightly acidic soil, and a full sun position. Despite its tropical origins, the Limeberry can tolerate brief, light frosts. This slow-growing plant has a tendency to sucker and forms a tight, compact structure, making it well-suited for cultivation in containers.
The Limeberry stands out as a rare and unusual citrus relative, making it a worthy addition to tropical climates for its unique characteristics and ornamental appeal.
