A popular native bushfood belonging to the Rutaceae or Citrus family, the Lemon Aspen stands tall as a large evergreen rainforest tree native to the lush rainforests of North Queensland. The small, white berries mature between autumn and winter, offering a highly aromatic citrus blend reminiscent of Grapefruit, Lime, and Lemon, complemented by subtle Eucalyptus notes. These delectable fruits can be enjoyed fresh or transformed into sauces, jams, dressings, or used in cooking with meat to impart their distinctive citrus flavour. Lemon Aspen fruits ripen from winter to early spring, often a sparse period for fresh fruits. The fruits are rich in antioxidants, making them a health-conscious choice as well. In its natural habitat, these trees can soar to impressive heights of over 25 metres, although many commonly attain a more manageable size below 10m and can be kept as such through pruning. The densely borne, elliptical foliage is attractive, glossy dark green, which contrasts well against the paler white berries. Flowering begins in summer and early autumn, with small yellow flowers emerging. Low-maintenance and aesthetically pleasing, the Lemon Aspen makes for an ideal edible addition to a native rainforest garden, alongside Davidson Plum and Lemon Myrtle. These plants thrive in sheltered positions, basking in either full sun or partial shade, and flourish in a moist, loamy soil. While native to tropical Queensland, Lemon Aspen plants have proven their adaptability, thriving in warm temperate/subtropical coastal climates farther south. Not only is the Lemon Aspen a fast-growing native bushfood, well-suited for a broad range of tropical to subtropical climates across Australia, but it also boasts numerous culinary applications, making it a versatile and valuable addition.
