General Info – Langsat, Lanzones, Duku, Lonkgong, Dokong

An abundant producer of addictively delicious, Longan/Grape-like fruit, the Langsat, also commonly known as Duku or Dokong, is a must-try fruit tree for those in tropical climates.
Langsat is native to Southeast Asia and widely cultivated throughout the region, featuring a variety of regional cultivars. These plants are commercially grown for local consumption with fruits being harvested from January to March. The elliptical, yellowish-grey fruits of the Langsat range in size from that of a Grape to a Lychee and are borne in tight clusters. The thickness of the skin and size of fruits varies across regional varieties. Inside, Langsat contain segments of aromatic, juicy, translucent pulp with a delectable sweet and sour taste reminiscent of a combination of Grape and Grapefruit. These aromatic, sweet fruits are typically enjoyed fresh and make an delicious snacking option, they can also be preserved through candying or canning.
Originating in lowland, humid tropical rainforests, the Langsat is sensitive to colder temperatures and may struggle outside of ultratropical climates. It is advisable to plant it in a warm, protected position. Langsat plants are quite thirsty, and they tend to grow and produce poorly without consistent, heavy rainfall or adequate access to moisture. Optimal growth is achieved in a freely draining, slightly acidic, and fertile soil. Young plants also benefit from shade. Langsat are slow-growing trees, taking up to 12 years before fruiting.
Langsat trees are a popular choice for backyard cultivation, typically reaching heights of 5-10 metres in cultivated settings. In the wild, they can soar to impressive heights of up to 30 metres. The leaves are pinnate, and clusters of yellow flowers dangle gracefully from the branches. Additionally, these trees exhibit wide and deep buttressing roots.
An exquisite fruit possessing a divine burst of sub-acid flavour, for those fortunate enough to have an ultratropical climate suitable for its cultivation, the Langsat is a true delight.
