General Info – Kuwini, Kwini, Kweni, Kuweni, Saipan Mango

Native to the rainforests of South-East Asia, the Kuwini is well adapted to the region’s rainforest climates, characterised by year-round high humidity and consistent rainfall.
Believed to be a hybrid between Mangifera Indica (the common Mango), indigenous to South Asia, and Mangifera Foetida (known as the Horse Mango), native to South-East Asia, the Kuwini thrives in the perpetual heat and humidity of tropical rainforests. It is widely cultivated throughout South-East Asia and will thrive in excessively humid areas where Mangoes do not. The Kuwini displays resilience to moderate rainfall, provided there are no dry seasons, and exhibits tolerance to partial shade and various soil conditions.
Resembling Mangifera Indica in appearance, these plants can grow up to 15 metres in optimal conditions. The foliage, form, and flowering of this plant closely resemble its parentage, featuring a conical crown, large glossy leaves with distinct veins, and prominent, fragrant inflorescences that emerge from terminal growth. Notably, the tree emits a slightly resinous/turpentine scent, earning it the name Odorata, owing to its strongly leaves and fruit.
The quality and taste of Kuwini fruits vary among varieties, with some closely resembling a regular Mango. However, many maintain a distinctive funky or turpentine taste. Ripe Kuwini have a greenish-yellow skin that should be peeled and removed for its unpleasant bitterness. The orange to yellow flesh within is a versatile, nutritious ingredient that can be enjoyed fresh, or made into chutneys and pickles. The orange to dark yellow flesh of these versatile fruits can be enjoyed fresh, used in chutneys, or pickled.
The Kuwini adds an interesting and unique touch to any tropical garden, serving as a valuable alternative for regions with overwhelmingly humid tropical climates where the conventional Mango may encounter challenges.
