General Info – Karanda, Bengal Currant, Christ’s Thorn, Carandas Plum
A close relative of the Natal Plum, with which it shares many similarities, the Karanda is a spiny hedging shrub that produces tart, edible purple berries. Karanda produce Grape-sized fruits that are initially tart and astringent when mature but will once fully ripe will develop a level of sweetness that makes fruits pleasant enough for fresh consumption. The taste of fruits is often likened to Cranberries due to their tangy berry flavour, and they are rich in Vitamin A, C, Iron and Calcium. The fruits are commonly sweetened and processed into jams and jellies, transforming and developing their natural acidity into a delightful preserve. Otherwise, fruits can be used in Pickles, Beverages or eaten with salt and seasonings. Similar to other members of the Carissa genus, such as the Natal Plum, the Karanda is resilient in various conditions, demonstrating drought, wind, and salt tolerance. Karanda thrives in coastal climates with sandy, nutrient-poor soils, and they can endure exposure to wind and salt. A slightly acidic to slightly alkaline soil is tolerated, with the plants preferring a full sun position. Karanda are only relatively cold hardy, capable of withstanding temperatures down to -2 degrees Celsius. These plants are not only hardy but also highly ornamental, forming dense evergreen shrubs or small trees that can reach heights of up to 5m. They feature attractive, fragrant, star-shaped white flowers that develop into contrasting fruits, maturing from red to pink and then purple. The sharp spines provide excellent utility, making them an ideal choice for a security hedge. Karanda Plums showcase ornamental foliage, perfect for creating an evergreen hedge, with their oval and smooth leaves retaining vibrancy throughout the year, further enhancing their appeal. Karanda is particularly well-suited for edible, coastal landscaping and is an ideal addition to gardens where Natal Plums flourish.
