Kadsura produces a unique and striking fruit, somewhat similar in appearance to an Annona, like the Sugar Apple, or a Pandanus fruit. Botanically considered aggregate fruits, Kadsura are composed of many wedge-shaped segments that can be broken apart and peeled to reveal a succulent white pulp beneath. Sweet with a pleasant acidity, juicy, and flavourful, Kadsura has a mild taste reminiscent of Peach, Pear, Wampee, and Langsat, with notable floral tones. Native to the northern mountains of Southeast Asia and Southern China, Kadsura thrives in subtropical to temperate climates. It naturally grows on the slopes and in the ravines of mountainous regions, preferring a sheltered, partially shaded position with moist, well-draining soil and plentiful rainfall. The plant is reportedly cold-tolerant down to -10 degrees Celsius and is suitable for all southern Australian mainland capitals. Kadsura can be either monoecious (self-pollinating) or dioecious (requiring both male and female plants). Fruiting occurs on the current year’s growth. Kadsura is an evergreen climbing vine that requires a supporting structure, such as a trellis, arch, or pergola. The plant has lush, dark green, succulent foliage that is a beautiful burgundy when new. The fleshy, cup-shaped red flowers are ornamental. Kadsura is also suitable for cultivation in containers.
