General Info – Jacana, Caimitillo, Acana, Bully Tree
The Jacana, a lesser-known member of the Pouteria genus, boasts relatives like the Star Apple, Sapodilla, Abiu, and Canistel. Despite often going unnoticed, Jacana presents a distinctive addition for collectors of the Pouteria genus. The small, yellow fruits of the Jacana, possess a creamy and pleasant taste, being borne abundantly once plants reach maturity. Fruits are smaller in size than their more commonly cultivated relatives the Canistel and Lucuma, and with more variability in flavour and form owing to their still largely wild nature. Jacana fruits are rich in Vitamins (A, B and C) and Minerals (Potassium, Calcium and Phosphorous) and can be eaten fresh or made into Preserves. Jacana trees thrive year-round in tropical climates, with consistently high temperatures, abundant rainfall, and elevated humidity levels. Jacana prefers a partial shade position when young, transitioning to full sun exposure as they mature. Jacana are slow to mature and begin flowering, requiring up to 20 years in the wild or at least 10 years in cultivation, Plants will develop a well-rounded, mature canopy before commencing the flowering and fruit-bearing stages. Jacana trees develop a robust taproot and supporting root system, allowing them to withstand dry periods and providing plants with exceptional resilience to strong winds. This makes them well-suited for regions prone to cyclones. Jacana plants flourish in moist, well-draining acidic soils ranging from sandy to clay loams. They prefer a consistent annual rainfall exceeding 1500mm throughout the year. Despite this preference and owing partially to their strong taproot, plants show moderate tolerance to drier periods. Jacana are partially self-pollinating but will benefit greatly from cross pollination. In their untamed, uncultivated state, Jacana trees can reach an impressive height of around 20m, although in less favorable climates, their maximum size is undoubtedly more modest. Jacana trees develop a broad, spreading crown adorned with glossy, ribbed oval-shaped leaves. The cream-coloured flowers are borne amply along stems to terminal growth. For enthusiasts seeking to explore an unconventional and untamed species with delectable fruits, the Jacana holds appeal for any tropical gardener with an affection for the diverse Pouteria genus.
