General Info – Green Sapote, Zapote Verde

Native to the highlands of Central America and more cold-hardy than other Pouteria varieties such as the Abiu and Mamey Sapote, the Green Sapote stands out as an excellent choice for cooler, marginal subtropical locations.
This resilient species can tolerate lower temperatures, provided it is shielded from extreme cold, especially frost and sub-zero conditions, to which it is intolerant. When given the right conditions, it can be cultivated as far south as Melbourne. For optimal growth, ensure that the trees have excellent drainage, fertile, slightly acidic soil, and a protected position—good drainage is a particularly essential requirement. Regular, consistent rainfall throughout the year is preferred, and plants will benefit from irrigation during dry seasons.
Green Sapotes are not only robust but also highly ornamental, featuring attractive flushes of new growth, a compact shape, and a tropical feel. Plants closely resemble other Pouteria varieties, showcasing dark green, sizable, and wavy foliage predominantly clustered at the ends of branches. Flowering takes place along the mostly leafless inner section of branches, featuring cream to pinkish-hued flowers. Trees can reach heights between 8-15m tall but may remain smaller in more marginal climates.
Green Sapotes produce oval-shaped fruits, olive-green-skinned fruits up to 15cm long with 1-2 large, black seeds within that are edible once roasted. Fruits can be picked when hard and allowed to soften. Once softened and fully ripened, the fruits boast soft, glossy flesh with a smooth, pudding-like texture that melts in your mouth. Flavour-wise, Green Sapotes are often considered similar but superior to the related Mamey Sapote. The moist, salmon-colored flesh has an appearance and a sweet, robust flavour reminiscent of sweet potato pie or pumpkin pie. These fruits are not only excellent for fresh consumption but also lend themselves well to beverages like milkshakes or desserts such as ice creams.
For growers in borderline subtropical or temperate climates, choosing Green Sapotes as the preferred Pouteria is highly recommended.
