General Info – Governor’s Plum, Ramontchi, Batoko Plum, Indian Plum

Found widely throughout the tropical regions of Africa and Asia, the Governors Plum is an evergreen small tree or shrub that bears Grape-sized, dark purple fruits resembling Plums.
Governor’s Plum yields round, maroon-skinned fruits with a soft, deep orange pulp boasting a sweet and tangy flavour often compared to Plums. These fruit are not only rich in Vitamin C and Magnesium, but also packed with pectin, making them ideal for both fresh consumption and for crafting preserves like jams and jellies.
Originally believed to be native to Tropical Asia, Governor Plums have spread across the east coast of Africa and have become invasive in many tropical regions worldwide, thanks to their prolific self-seeding and adaptability to various conditions. In regions with ideal climates, growers may opt to protect trees from birds to prevent further spread, while also preserving the fruits. For best results, provide full sun, a fertile, slightly acidic, well draining soil and ample water, as Governor’s Plums traditionally thrive along riversides. They exhibit notable resilience to drought, poor drainage, and some alkalinity, although reduced rainfall may affect fruit production. Governor Plum will be damaged by even brief, light frosts and should be grown in a frost free climate.
Similar to their cousin, the Indian Coffee Plum (Flacourtia jangomas), seedling plants are prickly, particularly in their youth, gradually losing their thorns as they mature. Gardeners can purchase and cultivate specific varieties propagated from cuttings which will remain thornless at all stages, in addition to being self-pollinating. Consequently, growers might consider using Governors Plum as a security hedge due to its formidable thorns. These plants can be maintained as shrubs up to 5 metres tall, although under optimal conditions, they can reach heights of 15 metres.
Serving as an alternative to European Plums in tropical environments, the Governors Plum stands out as an intriguing fruit from Tropical Asia.
