General Info – Goji Berry, Wolfberry, Chinese Boxthorn, Himalayan Goji, Red Medlar
Goji Berries typically refer to the berries of two species: Lycium Barbarum, which commonly grows in a shrub form, and Lycium Chinense, which grows as a vine. Both species are closely related, with nearly identical fruits, allowing growers to choose either form based on their available space. The small, orange to dark red berries boast a distinct tart flavour, often compared to Cranberries, Liquorice, sour Cherries, tart Plums, or Tomatoes. Primarily cultivated for their medicinal properties, Goji Berries are highly valued in traditional medicine for their rich content of antioxidants and anti-aging attributes. These berries are suitable for fresh consumption, juicing, and drying, with the latter being a common commercial practice, being the main form in which Goji Berries are sold. Dried berries are frequently incorporated into dishes like soups and congees, imparting their unique taste and health benefits. Native to the Himalayas and Inner Mongolia, Goji Berries exhibit tolerance to harsh conditions, particularly winter cold. They thrive in full sun, well-draining moist soil, and moderate rainfall. However, these plants can also flourish in partial shade and endure moderate droughts. Goji Berries are a member of the Solanaceae or Nightshade family, together with Tomato, Potato, Tamarillo and Pepino and have flowers typical of Nightshades. Foliage is small and lanceolate and can be quite dense in healthy form. Known for prolific yields, Goji Berries are an ideal choice for those seeking a plentiful, health food that contributes distinctive flavors to various dishes.
