General Info – Giant Yellow Mulberry, Corkwood, Soup Tree, Ibisere, Bush Pineapple

Native to the tropical rainforests of Central and West Africa, the Giant Yellow Mulberry, also commonly known as the Soup Tree, is a valuable, multi-purpose edible tree with edible fruits, leaves and nuts.
The knobbly, yellow fruits are up to 15cm in diameter, earning them the descriptive name Giant Yellow Mulberry. The pulp of fruits is pleasantly sub-acid while the young leaves of plants are also commonly eaten in soups, such as Ofe Ujuju from South-eastern Nigeria. The edible, nutritious seeds are cooked for consumption and are rich in oil, protein and sugars.
Endemic to the humid and wet tropics of Central Africa, the Giant Yellow Mulberry thrives in hot, humid conditions with consistent year-round rainfall. A moist, well-draining soil in a full sun position is the ideal position in which a plant may begin fruiting within 4 years.
Giant Yellow Mulberry trees have a spreading form and reach heights between 10-20m. The massive foliage of trees consists of leaflets with leaves that reach up to 70cm in length when mature. Due to their dioecious nature, it is advisable to plant at least three seedlings, which will require substantial space for optimal growth to maturity.
An excellent choice for gardens with ample space and seeking a multi-purpose edible tree.
