General Info – Mexican Custard Apple, Bullocks Heart, Wild Sweetsop

Annona Reticulata, commonly known as the Mexican Custard Apple, stands in relative obscurity compared to its well-known relatives, the Cherimoya and Sugar Apple.
The Mexican Custard apple produces a distinctively smooth, pale-skinned, heart-shaped fruit, often referred to as Bullocks Heart. The fruit’s colours range from pale green to white and red due to a distinct seedling variability. Mexican Custard Apples share a taste profile similar to other Annona varieties like Cherimoya and Sugar Apple, making them versatile for use in desserts and beverages. While the flavour varies significantly among seedlings, these fruits generally exhibit a less pronounced sweetness than other Annona varieties. Nevertheless, they boast a delightful creamy, custard, and Vanilla flavour that combines well in ice creams, drinks and other desserts.
For optimal growth, Mexican Custard Apple trees prefer a rich, well-drained soil and benefit from protection against harsh sun during their early stages. Shielding young trees from salt exposure and minimizing wind exposure is also essential. Unlike some common Annona species, Annona Reticulata is less drought-tolerant and thrives in regions with a consistent high to medium rainfall throughout the year. Frost tolerance is comparable to that of the Custard Apple, with a capacity to withstand light frosts.
These semi-deciduous plants exhibit the typical ribbed leaves of the Annona family and can reach heights of up to 10 metres with a rounded, spreading crown. The fruits, characterized by varying shapes and colors, create an appealing contrast against the foliage. Mexican Custard Apples, being predominantly wild, display seedling variability, adding an exciting dimension for growers with ample space and the willingness to cultivate multiple seedlings to find a favourite.
While their relative obscurity may limit widespread recognition, cultivating these unique Annona fruits can be a rewarding venture for those willing to embrace the variability and distinctive qualities of this lesser-known gem.
