A close relative of the Mamoncillo with which it shares many similarities, for those with space and suitable conditions, the Cotopriz is an excellent collectors item with a unique fruit. The Cotopriz produces small, green fruits, not too dissimilar in size and appearance to a Macadamia nut. Inside the fruits are much closer to a Longan or Lychee which are both members of the same botanical family. The thin green skin conceals a vibrant orange, succulent pulp that envelops a single large seed. The pulp offers a pleasant, sub-acidic, and slightly sweet taste. While these fruits are commonly enjoyed raw, they can also be utilized in juices and jams. Cotopriz thrives in tropical, lowland environments and is not well-suited for temperate climates, displaying no tolerance for frost and being sensitive to cool temperatures. Plants are relatively flexible of different conditions, being tolerant of moderate-high rainfall, full sun to partial shade and a range of soils provided they are well-drained. Once established, these plants prove to be drought-resistant, although they flourish with ample rainfall. It’s important to note that Cotopriz plants are usually dioecious, requiring both male and female counterparts for fruit production. Trees can reach large heights of up to 20m, though they are more commonly 15m in height, still an imposing height for many with limited garden space. Plants have dense, wide crowns that provide plentiful shade. Clusters of small, white flowers are borne by trees. A rare and captivating collector’s item native to the Tropical Americas, the Cotopriz promises a distinctive addition to any horticultural enthusiast’s collection.
