General Info – Black Chokeberry, Aronia Berries

Native to temperate North America, the Black Chokeberry produces an abundance of small black berries, named for their distinct bitterness and astringency.
The glossy berries ripen in early Autumn and possess a sweet and sour taste reminiscent of a tart Apple and Cherry, with a noticeable astringency. Often, the fruits are sweetened and utilised in jams and preserves for their delightful taste and the rich colour they impart. Black Chokeberries have a historical association with Pemmican, often being utilised in this traditional staple food for many groups indigenous to North America.
Native from Newfoundland to Alabama, this plant thrives in diverse environments, spanning from woods and swamps to thickets, showcasing its remarkable tolerance to a variety of conditions. As a small shrub, Black Chokeberry plants thrive in both partial shade and full sun, but they exhibit superior growth and productivity in full sun. Black Chokeberries tolerate a wide range of soils, ranging from boggy clay soils to dry sandy ones. Nevertheless, optimal performance is achieved in well-draining, moist, and fertile loams. The petite, black berries are frequently targeted by birds attracted to their vibrant colour, necessitating the use of nets to protect the harvest.
Black Chokeberry forms an elegant and ornamental shrub, maintaining a compact height of less than 2 metres with a spreading, upright form. Its autumn foliage exhibits stunning shades of orange and red, adding a touch of vibrant beauty to the landscape in otherwise gloomy autumns. Belonging to the Rosaceae family, it stands as a splendid example, adorned with clusters of fragrant, white-pink flowers that cover the entire plant, enhancing its visual appeal in Spring.
Adaptable to various conditions in cool climates and boasting a delightful flavour and stunning colour, the Black Chokeberry stands out as a captivating yet excellent choice for culinary enthusiasts and individuals passionate about crafting preserves.
