General Info – Cherimoya, Custard Apple, Chirimoya
A cold-hardy Annona well-suited to warm temperate and subtropical climates, the Cherimoya is perfect for any gardener seeking an Annona variety resilient to cooler temperatures. Native to the highland tropics of the Andes with its mild climate, Cherimoya trees tolerate mild frosts, enduring temperatures down to -4 degrees when mature. In cooler climates, the trees may shed leaves during winter and require 50-100 chill hours to induce flowering. Coastal warm temperate and subtropical climates, characterized by high humidity, low temperature variation, and cool winters, are ideal for Cherimoya cultivation. Due to these climatic preferences, Cherimoya is grown in a range of climates from the highland tropical areas of Peru to cooler subtropical regions such as Southern Spain. Cherimoya trees prefer fertile, slightly acidic, well-draining soils and moderate rainfall. Both drought and excess water can impact fruit production and growth. The taste of Cherimoya is reminiscent of other Annona varieties like Atemoya or Sugar Apple, offering a custard-like texture with a sweet, fragrant tropical flavour likened to Pineapple, Banana, Mango, and Coconut. The fruits are often used to flavour desserts such as ice cream and beverages or can be enjoyed fresh or chilled. It’s important to note that the distinct, black seeds must not be consumed as they are poisonous. Warm temperatures are crucial throughout fruit growth to ensure full flavour and sweetness and it can be noted problem in cooler climates where fruits dont develop full flavour. Cherimoya trees can grow up to 9 metres tall and are largely evergreen, occasionally becoming briefly deciduous when the elliptical, velvety leaves shed. Outside of their native range, hand pollination may be necessary due to the absence of natural pollinators. Grafted varieties are available, ensuring guaranteed fruit quality and quicker fruiting, typically within two to three years, with production improving as the tree matures. Productive in climates traditionally considered too cool for many Annona varieties, the Cherimoya, with its fragrant, sweet flavour, occupies a unique and productive niche.
