General Info – Chempedak, Cempedak

A close relative of the Jackfruit, with which it shares many similarities, the Chempedak is a strictly tropical, evergreen Artocarpus ideal for enthusiasts of both Jackfruit and Durian.
Resembling Jackfruits in size and appearance, Chempedak trees are rapidly growing trees can reach heights of up to 20 metres, boasting a dense and rounded crown similar to Jackfruits. They also bear fruit cauliflorously, meaning fruits are easily accessible from the main trunk and branches.
Thriving in an ultra-tropical environment, these trees do not tolerate temperatures below 5 degrees Celsius. The Chempedak exhibits a preference for high humidity, consistent temperatures, and ample rainfall throughout the year, although it has a lower cold tolerance compared to its Artocarpus counterparts, such as Jackfruit and Kwai Muk. To cultivate Chempedak successfully, plant it in a warm location with well-draining, fertile, acidic soils, ensuring consistent watering throughout the year. Chempedak have deep taproots and are also tolerant of temporary flooding and a high water table.
The fruits of the Chempedak are typically similar in size to a small-medium Jackfruit and possess a strong, Durian-like pungency. Like the Jackfruit, the edible arils within are consumed, but the fruit can also be enjoyed when immature as a vegetable. The arils are notably soft, often described as either creamy or slimy but are often held in higher esteem than Jackfruit. These fruits are exceptionally sweet, with a taste frequently likened to a blend of Jackfruit and Durian, owing to its distinctive pungent flavour. Commonly consumed fresh or in desserts, Chempedak can be transformed into a flavourful pudding. Seeds are rich in starch with a nutty flavour and can be either boiled or roasted.
Offering a delightful fusion of Jackfruit and Durian qualities, the Chempedak is a perfect addition to any Artocarpus collection.
