General Info – Cassabanana, Sikana, Musk Cucumber

A vigorous and swiftly growing tropical vine native to Tropical South America, the Cassabanana is a member of the Cucurbit family, alongside melons like Rockmelon and Honeydew. The taste of Cassabanana fruits resembles related Cucurbits, especially Rockmelon/Cantaloupe, with hints of Pumpkin. These aromatic and exceedingly sweet fruits are versatile, finding use in drinks, milkshakes, preserves, jams, or enjoyed raw or chilled, akin to a rockmelon. It’s crucial to note that both seeds and leaves are toxic and should not be consumed.
Similar to Melons, the Cassabanana thrives in full sun positions and with high rainfall or generous watering. A fertile, acidic, freely-drained soil is ideal and soils will benefit from the addition of compost and mulch for fertility and moisture-preservation. Successful ripening and growth demand high temperatures, making it a perennial in tropical or subtropical climates with consistently warm temperatures. In warm temperate zones boasting a lengthy, hot growing season, it can also be grown as an annual. Vines can grow up to 15m in height with broad, hairy, veined leaves and attaching itself with strong adhesive tendrils. Given the Cassabanana’s substantial vine and large fruits, comparable in size to a Butternut Pumpkin, a sturdy trellis or support structure is essential. As a prolific producer of vibrant, appealing fruits, the Cassabanana is a worthwhile addition for gardeners to consider.
